Stylianos Kyriakides – Statues and plaques

1998 - 2024

 

Unveiled in 1998 in his hometown Filothei, Greece, outside the stadium he built in 1954, with donations.   

The sculpture was donated by  Mr. Ellinas a Greek Cypriot.




Unveiled in 2004 – In the city of Marathon, Greece.



The statue shows Kyriakides running to victory, encouraged by the spirit of Spyridon Luis, the first Olympic marathon winner in 1896. Both are on top of the marathon mountains. At the base of the statue is Pheidippides running to Athens to announce the victory after the Athenians defeated the Persians in the battle of Marathon in 490 BC.  The statue was donated by NEW BALANCE just before the start of the Athens Olympic games in 2004.  The statue is 4.3 meters high and is hand-made by the famous   Romanian-American sculptor Miko Kaufman.

Unveiled in 2006 – In the city of Hopkinton, Mass, USA

 

The same statue as the one in Marathon was unveiled in 2006 in Hopkinton, Mass. USA  the start of the Boston Marathon. The statue was again donated by NEW BALANCE.




Memorial plaques

 

Three similar memorial plaques have been placed between 2017 and 2019.

The first in the big stadium of the city of Paphos in Cyprus, where he was born,

the second in the Filothei stadium where he lived,

and the third in the village of Pyrgos in Greece where he is buried

Thus joining the triangle of life

Unveiled in 2010 in Statos-Agios Fotios, Paphos – Cyprus

The Statos-Agios Fotios village,  

is the Birthplace of Stylianos Kyriakides 

in the mountains of Paphos, Cyprus




The main stadium in the city of Paphos, Cyprus, was renamed in 2017, to “STYLIANOS KYRIAKIDES” Stadium 

 

The stadium that he built, with money found from sponsors, in 1956, in Filothei, Athens where he lived, to help REVIVE Greek track and field events after the war, has his name.

 

In 2024 Bank of America reproduced (in light easily transportable material) the Stylianos Kyriakides statue which in on the Boston marathon course, to exhibit in other marathons that they are sponsors.
